You might have heard of CBD oil or CBD topicals, CBD lubricants, CBD capsules and CBD edibles. It wouldn’t be surprising if you have, considering the fact that the amount of products being sold in the market containing this popular and controversial substance is increasing day by day.
However, you might find yourself asking this question: what exactly is CBD? Why is it so popular today? What exactly does it do? Read on to find out everything you need to know about this product.
Let’s get into the basics first. Before finding out what it does or where it comes from, it’s important to know what it is. CBD is short for cannabidiol, which basically the part of cannabis that does not produce psychoactive and hallucinogenic side effects when consumed. The psychoactive part of the plant, that which has been the topic of widespread debate for decades, the subject of worry and that which has been said to be the cause of marijuana’s addictive property, is called THC—short for tetrahydrocannabinol.
CBD contains no THC, which means that it gives users all the health benefits of cannabis without the added side effects. This is why it has become so popular across so many different industries, including sports, medicine, and even the military.
Now that you know what it is, let’s move onto how it is extracted. According to the Chief Scientific Officer of Eos Scientific, Dr. David Dawit, there are four methods of CBD extraction: isolate extraction, plant extraction, CO2 extraction and alcohol extraction.
Isolate extraction depends on hemp quality because it involves the extraction of pure CBD compounds. Plant extraction includes the whole hemp plant, thus the name, it is the favored method of CBD extraction today. There’s also CO2 extraction, which is basically forcefully extraction oil from the plant; this method is the most complex of the four, but it is also incredibly effective in separating cannabinoid compounds. The last method is alcohol extraction, which involves using a solvent to soak the hemp and remove oils, leaving only the CBD oil.
CBD is sold in a variety of different forms. CBD oil is one of the more popular forms of CBD. CBD can be used to alleviate pain and inflammation topically, or it can be ingested to help with anxiety, depression, sleeping and even seizures. New studies, such as a survey conducted by Lloyds Pharmacy stating that CBD oil is effective against eczema, are coming out stating that CBD’s uses stretch even further than anyone thought possible.
It is indeed true that CBD offers an astoundingly vast array of health benefits. However, it is also true that the production, sale and usage of products containing CBD still face controversy for being related to cannabis. Despite being proven by lab tests, studies and personal accounts by patients, to contain no trace of THC, many are still skeptical and even nervous about the possible effects of CBD-containing products.
Although recent times have seen big steps taken towards the legalization of cannabis for medicinal and recreational use, CBD products still have quite a ways to go in terms of being definitively accepted by the general public and the law.
